Living Wills
Also known as an Advanced Health Care Directive, this document instructs your physicians and agents named as medical power of attorneys how to handle terminal or vegetative states when you are unable to communicate your wishes.
Life-sustaining procedures listed in a living will might include:
- Blood transfusions
- Cardiac pacemaker implantation
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Chemotherapy
- Endotracheal tube use
- Intravenous feedings
- Major surgery
- Nasogastric tube use
- Organ transplants
- Parental feeding
- Renal dialysis
- The use of respirators or ventilators
The living will also contains a release of liability to those acting on your behalf, including our physicians and agents.
Many people provide a copy of this document to their physician and to those named in medical power of attorney documents. The original should be kept with your estate planning documents.
